Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?!!
If you are a Charger fan or just wonder what is going on with the potential new stadium deal this is the podcast for you. Richard and Joe interview Jim Steeg, former Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the San Diego Chargers (from 2004 to 2010) where he was in charge of all business operations for the team. Before that, he spent 35 years with the NFL and 26 years in charge of the Special Events Department (1979–2004). Under Steeg’s leadership, the Super Bowl expanded from a championship football game into a week-long extravaganza. A noted sports business and stadium events consultant, it was not a surprise when he was asked to join Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s stadium task force to pick a new stadium site.
“I think it’s doable,” he says. “It’s difficult, of course, a lot of ins and outs have to take place, and relationship-building. I’ve been around this a long time. Building new stadiums has been a struggle in almost every place; it kind of has to get to the precipice.”
“The best thing now is that we have a mayor I really, really like. He has strength and he’s smart; he knows this has to be done. I came here in ’04 because I believed in it. I made a promise then and never fulfilled it. I still believe we can get it done. It has to happen.” Canepa, N. (March 15, 2015) Steeg says new San Diego stadium is ‘doable’. Beyond his work for the mayor, he remains active in a variety of charities, including serving on the boards of the Downtown YMCA of San Diego, the Make A Wish Foundation of San Diego, and the University of San Diego Athletic Department Executive Cabinet. He was co-chair of the Special Events Committee for the 2008 United States Open golf tournament at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif.
Steeg received a Masters of Business Administration from Wake Forest University and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
