As a result he became an orthodontist to the stars when his practice was in Los Angeles. He did not run another marathon until 7 years later when an assistant in his office was tragically killed in a car accident and her boyfriend was left paralyzed. Dr. Rubin and two assistants from his office ran a marathon to raise money in support of the boyfriend. (U-T San Diego article) Since then he has run numerous marathons as part of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training where runners raise money for cancer research.
