Richard and Joe welcomed Former Presidential Candidate and Governor, Michael Dukakis. Mr. Dukakis called from his UCLA office where he has taught during the Winter quarter for the past 23 years. Many of those trips entailed appearing at City Club of San Diego thanks to George Mitrovich also a former guest of our show.

Richard, Joe and Michael discussed gun control issues surrounding the Parkland High School tragedy, trips to California, the Red Sox, the Padres and baseball in general including how Fenway Park was saved from the wrecking ball.

Josh Balk, Josh Balk, Vice President of Farm Animal Protection for The Humane Society of the United States

Josh Balk is the vice president of farm animal protection for The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), where he has worked since 2005. Josh has led efforts to enact animal welfare policies with many of the world’s largest companies, including Walmart, Wendy’s, Kroger, Denny’s and dozens more. These policies have helped shift the food industry’s reliance on veal crates, gestation crates, and battery cages. He’s also been a leader in creating and supporting start-up animal-friendly companies, including co-founding Hampton Creek and guiding venture capital firms and high net worth individuals to invest in this space. They also discussed Prevent Cruelty California’s effort to place a critical measure on the November 2018 ballot to upgrade California’s laws relating to the extreme confinement of farm animals.

Prior to coming to HSUS, Balk worked at Compassion Over Killing (COK) where he conducted investigations into factory farm operations and launched one of our nation’s first advertising campaigns on farm animals.

Balk’s work has been covered by the Associated Press, Fortune, CNN, New York Times, Washington Post and dozens of other outlets.

Josh Graduated from Radnor High School in Pennsylvania in 1998, he attended Keystone Junior College until 2000 before transferring to George Washington University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Government.
