Fighting Fires to Fighting Breast Cancer with Lorraine Hutchinson
As Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure is quickly approaching, Richard and Joe welcomed guest, Lorraine Hutchinson. Lorraine was the first African American Women Deputy in the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. She oversaw all the fire stations in the district while on duty for over 20 years until she heard some unexpected news.
In November of 2012, she received a diagnosis of Stage IB breast cancer. Within weeks of diagnosis she underwent a mastectomy of her left breast followed by four treatments of chemotherapy. Miraculously with both physical and emotional courage she found she could not only fight fires, but fight breast cancer well. Feeling as though she now has a second chance, she explained her exciting new role as Director of Community Relations for Susan G. Komen where she is dedicated to empowering and educating women about the importance of early detection.
She brought to our attention that in San Diego six women a day are told they have breast cancer, and sadly one woman per day passes away. Lorraine and Susan G. Komen want the public to know that this doesn’t have to be – that if caught early enough, the most common type of breast cancer is 99% survivable.
Lorraine is excited to announce this year’s Komen Race for the Cure that will be held at Balboa Park on Sunday, November 1st, 2015 at 8:00 am. She and many others will be advocating for breast cancer treatments, services, and support through a victorious 5k and 1-mile walk/run. Participating in the race helps provide free services for women through every step of their breast cancer journey. These services include diagnostic mammograms, temporary financial aid, meal delivery and much more.
75% of every dollar raised from the race in San Diego stays right here in San Diego County. The remaining 25% funds international breast cancer research. With $1 million invested this year alone, Susan G. Komen San Diego is the County’s largest funder of free breast cancer treatments and is the only organization providing women with the services they need. It is an opportunity for thousands of families and individuals to get involved and share a message of inspiration within our community.
