Running as Good Medicine with Steve Scott, Mark Sarno and Nick Scarpello

steve_scottRichard and Joe put on their running shoes. They interviewed Steve Scott, America’s greatest miler. Steve has posted three outdoor U.S. Mile records, a World Championship silver medal, two Olympic appearances and an astounding 136 sub-4 minute miles. No one ran more sub-4 minute miles than Steve Scott. His 3:47.69 mile in 1982 was the second-fastest mile ever run and stood as the U.S.record for 25 years. Steve was the founder of the Carlsbad 5000 road race and set world-best 5K times in 1986 and 1988. In 1999 Steve became the cross-country country coach at Cal State San Marcos achieving remarkable success building the team from the ground up into perennial contenders in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Although he has had an outstanding running career, his life has not been without challenges. Twenty years ago he was diagnosed with testicular cancer, which he beat, and a little over a year ago he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He has successfully finished his treatment and is now using his experience to increase public awareness of prostate cancer and the importance of early detection.

Joining Richard, Joe and Steve were Mark Sarno and Nick Scarpello. Mark is an award winning scientist, inventor, biostatistician, scientific advisory board member, doctor of law, and licensed patent agent with 32 years experience in research, development, clinical/regulatory, biostatistics, patent law, and project management resulting in 44 commercialized products (8 drugs, 36 in vitro diagnostic assays). He is also an avid runner and the co-founder of The Encinitas Mile. The Encinitas Mile is the ultimate test of speed and endurance takes place along the fast, flat USATF-certified course on Vulcan Avenue in downtown Encinitas.

Nick is Brand & Creative Communications Project Administrator at Illumina and the marketing and communications specialist for The Encinitas Mile.
